Long-term question on the Alexander McQueen oversized sneaker. Almost every McQueen post is a QC or a first-impressions review: “stitching looks clean, shape looks good”. What do people report after weeks or months of actually wearing them? Comfort, the sole, the leather, and whether the white stays white.

The most useful thread on this is an old side-by-side of a retail pair against a rep, with a long comment section about wear. The short version of what owners report over time:

1. **The sole is hard.** On retail and on good reps.
2. **Break-in takes a while** , and it’s the sole, not the upper.
3. **The leather matters more than the stitching** in the long run.
4. **Whites drift towards bone white** , on reps and retail.

I’ll take them one by one with what the reports actually say.

On the sole: one comment described the retail sole as “quite literally a brick”, with a retail pair that took months to become comfortable. The reviewer of the rep agreed: rough sole, and after about three hours the toes “start begging for air”, but they said retail does exactly the same. So if a rep feels stiff and hard in the first weeks, that’s the model, not a flaw. A rep with a _soft_, squishy sole is actually further from retail.

So are they a bad daily shoe?

That came up in the same thread: “so basically not recommended for daily use?” The answer was “definitely not, but the more you use them, the better the break-in”. For long days, an extra insole helps more than sizing up. Sizing up in a shoe this stiff makes the heel slip, and the sole doesn’t flex enough to compensate. Several recent QC posts mention updated sizing on some batches, so check the batch’s own notes rather than old advice.

On the upper: the important line in that review was that many McQueen reps use a coated, plastic-feeling base, while the better batch used something “not shiny, but not quite leather leather”. That’s the long-term difference. A coated upper looks fine on day one and cracks along the flex line over time; a real leather upper creases and softens. When you read QC photos, look for a matte surface with visible grain, not a uniform gloss.

</div>

And the “bone white” question: the same reviewer noticed the white upper turning bone white, “yellowish to be exact”, on both their pairs, while a lower-tier batch didn’t change. That sounds like a flaw, but white leather drifting warmer with time and light is normal, and a coated upper that stays bright white is often the plastic-feeling one. If you want to slow it down, store them out of the sun. If the sole yellows, that’s a separate topic, covered in [yellowed midsoles](https://superreps.net/t/yellowed-midsoles-on-reps-fix-them-or-leave-the-vintage-look/183).

On cleaning: the thick sole edge is what gets dirty first, and it shows on an all-white shoe. A soft brush and a mild cleaner on the sole edge, nothing harsh on the leather. For suede versions, the [suede cleaning thread](https://superreps.net/t/cleaning-suede-on-jordan-4s-and-yeezys-eraser-water-or-foam-and-how-not-to-leave-a-water-stain/196) applies as is.

One more observation from reviews of several pairs: the heel tab is where colour versions differ most, and it’s also what rubs against trousers. On suede or coloured heel tabs, expect a bit of wear there before anything else. Not a reason to avoid them, just where to look in month three.

For context on how long rep sneakers last in general, the [3, 6 and 12 month reviews thread](https://superreps.net/t/how-long-do-rep-sneakers-actually-last-what-the-3-6-and-12-month-reviews-say/185) has the broader picture. McQueens fit that pattern: the sole outlasts the upper, and the upper depends on the material.

McQueen oversized after months of wear, summed up:

1. **Hard sole = normal.** Retail is the same. Expect a break-in of weeks, not days. A soft sole is further from retail.
2. **Comfort:** stiff for long days at first. An extra insole helps more than sizing up.
3. **Upper material is the long-term deciding factor.** Matte with visible grain ages well; glossy and coated tends to crack at the flex line.
4. **Bone white is normal** for white leather over time. Store out of the sun.
5. **Cleaning:** brush the sole edge; be gentle on the leather.
6. **Heel tab** is where wear shows first on coloured versions.

When comparing batches, ask about the upper material first, then the sole.

Very useful. Upper material first, and I won’t panic about the hard sole.
