A deliberately provocative question for the archive crowd: does accuracy matter when the originals were about the idea? The pieces we chase (Raf’s bombers and knits, Helmut Lang’s utility pieces, Margiela’s reworks) were celebrated for their ideas, not their thread counts. So: **when we judge an archive replica, should “accuracy” mean fabric, or should it mean the details that carried the idea?** There is more detail in [Vetements-style oversized hoodies](https://superreps.net/t/sweats-oversize-facon-vetements-juger-un-fit-volontairement-trop-grand/223).

From the in-hand reviews I’ve read, the misses are mostly _details_, not fabric:

- A bomber review: zip and pocket construction wrong, patches hard to read, and none of the retail fading or distressing.
- A sweater QC: the “faded” print turned out to be grey pixels up close.
- A coat review: fabric good, graphics clear, but patch colours differing from the reference.

But fabric matters too, doesn’t it? An archive piece in poor fabric ages badly, and with archive pieces, ageing is part of the story.

Agreed, but notice the coat example: good fabric, still wrong. Fabric is necessary, not sufficient. In those collections the meaning lived in patch placement, print treatment and proportion.

Devil’s advocate: if it looks sick on the fit, who’s checking zip construction? 😅

The people who care about archive pieces. That’s precisely the audience. A hype hoodie can survive approximate details. An archive bomber that gets the patches and distressing wrong becomes a costume of the idea.

Some of it can be fixed, though. Distressing and fading can be added by hand. A flat print can’t become a true faded print, but a garment that’s too clean can be aged. Wrong zip construction is a bigger job.

And sizing. Archive cuts are often very specific, like cropped bodies and long sleeves. One of the bomber reviews also said the sizing was off. If the proportions are wrong, the silhouette is wrong, and that’s the first thing people see.

So what would a good archive QC actually prioritise?

In order of what carries the design:

**1. Proportion and cut.** Body length, sleeve length, shoulder. Measure against reference measurements of the original, not a modern size chart. If the silhouette is wrong, the rest barely matters.

**2. Graphic and patch accuracy.** Placement, scale, legibility and colour against a reference of the **exact season**. Zoom in on prints sold as “faded”: a true fade and a pixelated grey print are different things.

[[PHOTO: macro close-up of a printed graphic showing whether the fade is a real gradient or a pixel pattern]]

**3. Construction details.** Zips, pocket construction, linings. Hard to fix, so check before accepting.

**4. Surface treatment.** Fading, distressing, wash. Partly fixable by hand.

**5. Fabric.** Necessary for ageing well, but on its own it proves nothing.

So yes, accuracy matters, but accuracy of the idea: proportion and graphics first, fabric last. The opposite of how most QC threads rank things.

</div>

I’m convinced. And I’d add: if the fabric is good, it will at least age with dignity even if the details aren’t perfect.

Ok you got me. Proportion first, then patches. Fair. 🫡
