The Birkin and the Kelly are where craft talk gets most intense. The original is famous for hand saddle stitching, and the high-tier guides talk about leather grain, edges and hardware in loving detail. Owners compare notes on this in [Hermès Constance QC](https://superreps.net/t/hermes-constance-qc-the-h-clasp-the-strap-and-the-epsom-grain-what-to-check/242).

But in QC we only get photos. Which of those details can we actually judge from a PSP?

Good framing. Going point by point against the high-tier guide:

- **Leather grain** : irregular pebbling on Togo, natural pores. _Partly visible. Needs a close-up in daylight._
- **Saddle stitching** : slanted stitches with waxed thread, not perfectly uniform like a machine. _Visible with a macro shot._
- **Edges** : matte, slightly coarse, not glossy. _Visible._
- **Hardware** : sharp plaque edges, neat rivets, engraving. _Visible with a macro shot._
- **Stiffness** : _not visible._

</div>

Saddle stitching can be recognised by its even slant. A perfectly straight, identical seam is a machine. You can see it in a photo, provided it’s sharp.

</div>

Stitch spacing can be counted from a sharp macro. Count over a fixed length and compare with your chosen reference: **pass** if consistent, **check** if it varies along the seam.

On edges, a gentle note: the guides warn about edge paint that’s tacky, rubbery or peeling. Tackiness can’t be seen in a photo, but gloss and peeling can.

What should you compare the photos against? Real bags vary so much.

The guides are clear: compare PSPs with the factory photos, and use several buyer-photo references, not a single authentic image.

And leather above all. A bad leather can’t be redeemed, whatever the stitching.

Agreed in priority. But leather is also the least judgeable from photos. Conflict noted.

What PSPs can and can’t tell you on Birkin/Kelly-style bags:

| Item | What to look for | From photos? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Saddle stitching | slanted, waxed, slightly irregular; consistent spacing | **Yes** , macro needed. _High._ |
| Edges | matte, slightly coarse; no gloss, no peeling | **Mostly.** Tackiness not visible. _Medium–high._ |
| Hardware | sharp plaque edges, neat rivets, clean engraving | **Yes** , macro needed. _High._ |
| Leather grain | irregular pebbling, visible pores (Togo) | **Partly** , daylight close-up. _Medium._ |
| Leather feel / stiffness | appropriate structure | **No.** _Low._ |

If you have one, post a macro of the saddle stitching along the handle so the slant of the stitches shows.
A daylight close-up of a bag edge, to show the matte edge paint, would help too.

**Method**

- Reference: factory photos plus several buyer photos, not one authentic image.
- Ask for a daylight close-up of the leather and a macro of the stitching and edges.
- Priority: leather first (sellier\_exigeant is right), even though it’s the hardest to judge from photos. That’s why a daylight close-up matters most.

Wonderful. Marking it. Real-life wear photos of edges after a few months would be the perfect next chapter.
