# Bag of the day: the Jackie 1961, from G1244 to icon. Bag of the day: the Jackie. It debuted in 1961 with a plain code, G1244: a soft, saddle-shaped hobo. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was photographed with it so often that Gucci, many years later, officially renamed it Jackie 1961. It is the “soft” sister of the Bamboo 1947, born in the post-war years when materials were scarce and Florentine artisans bent bamboo over a flame. The Jackie comes up often in the community reviews. What a lovely opener. From the reviews, the details people discuss most are the stitching, the hardware (that piston closure), and the leather: smooth and fairly structured versus too soft or too shiny. ---

In the comparison threads, the points that separated versions were stitching quality, hardware finish and leather smoothness or stiffness. Minor issues mentioned in an older review: a dent, a slightly uneven side, and leather that was too shiny. ---

Shape first. A hobo should drape softly, not collapse. A misshapen side shows straight away. ---

Very true. The Jackie is born soft, but not shapeless: the half-moon curve is its signature. ---

For leather that looks too shiny, I’d resist the urge to “fix” it with products straight away. If you do try anything, test it on a hidden spot first. ---

What makes a Jackie read right, in priority order: 1. **Silhouette** : the half-moon curve, soft but holding its shape. Sides even, no dents. _Visible in photos: high confidence._ 2. **Piston closure and hardware** : clean finish, consistent tone, smooth action. _Finish: high. Action: needs a video._ 3. **Stitching** : even and straight along the curve. It was a key differentiator in comparisons. _High, with a macro shot._ 4. **Leather** : smooth and fairly structured; overly shiny leather was a recurring minor complaint. _Medium, in daylight._ If you have a Jackie, post it from the front and in profile so the half-moon silhouette shows. A close-up of the piston closure would help too. Plus manico\_bamboo’s history: it’s a soft hobo by design. Judge it on shape that holds, not on stiffness. ---
