A question I see again and again in the bag communities, and I’d love us to answer it properly: **what actually gives away a rep Chanel Classic Flap**? (The Chanel 25 has its own [QC checklist thread](https://superreps.net/t/can-you-spot-rep-chanel-25-qc-checklist/69).)

The usual list is hardware colour, quilting, caviar pattern and dry leather. There is more detail in [the thread on Chanel lambskin vs caviar](https://superreps.net/t/chanel-lambskin-vs-caviar-which-leather-for-a-first-flap-bag-and-how-does-each-one-age/240). But even authentic Chanels vary between seasons, so how much of that list really holds up?

Going through recent QC threads, these are the points people actually raised, not the theoretical list:

- **Hardware tone** : a 187 C25 owner worried the gold looked too yellow and matte next to auth.
- **Hardware fit** : a 187 flap QC had backplate screws not sitting flush.
- **Alignment** : bottom stitching and strap alignment are frequent red-light reasons.
- **Leather sheen** : a caviar bag from God factory got a complaint about a “plastic-like” shine in daylight.

</div>

What a good list. Allow me a comment from the fabric side on the sheen: a plastic look usually comes from a heavy surface finish (a coating or pressed grain), not from the hide itself. It doesn’t disappear with use, unlike dryness.

</div>

That’s such an important distinction. And the dryness point is real but gentler. One owner compared a rep WOC with her auth and found the rep only “a tad drier”, which she put down to conditioning her auth regularly.

Dryness is a surface condition. Conditioner helps, if you use it sparingly and test first on a hidden spot. A coated finish won’t absorb it, so it won’t change.

On hardware tone, I’d flag one thing: QC photos under warm indoor light make most gold look yellow. Before red-lighting for colour, ask for a daylight photo.

And what about the “will people with auths notice” part? That’s what the original poster really wanted to know.

One reply in the C25 thread made a point I found wise: the biggest giveaway is usually how the bag is worn and styled, not the bag itself. It’s an opinion, of course, not a QC rule.

Here’s a checklist ranked by how often each point actually comes up and how reliably you can judge it:

| # | Check | Pass | Flag | Judge from photos? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Stitch and strap alignment (bottom, back, CC position) | lines continue cleanly | visible offset | **Yes, high confidence** |
| 2 | Hardware fit | screws flush, plate square | raised screws, gaps | **Yes, high** |
| 3 | Quilting | diamonds meet across flap and back | diamonds drift or shrink | **Yes, high** |
| 4 | Hardware tone | matches reference in daylight | yellow or matte vs reference | Medium, only in daylight |
| 5 | Leather sheen | soft, broken reflection | uniform plastic-like glare | Low from photos, high when handled |
| 6 | Dryness | supple | stiff, dull | Low; often fixable with conditioner |

**Two notes:**

- Authentic bags vary too, so compare against a reference of the **same season and leather** , not a generic image.
- Tiers matter more than any single tell. A member’s summary in an LV tiers thread is a useful frame: low tier often isn’t real leather, mid tier tends to be composite or lower-grade leather, and high tier uses better leather. If the leather tier is wrong, no checklist will save it.

Confidence: medium-high on 1–3, lower on 4–6.

That’s beautifully clear, @stitch_auditor. Marking it. And I’d love wear photos from anyone who’s carried theirs for a season: how the hardware and corners look after months tells us more than any QC.
