Lambskin or caviar is the question that comes up first with a classic flap-style bag (medium size). Lambskin looks so soft in every photo, but caviar keeps being called “the sensible one”.

To make it concrete, say the bag is used like this:

- most days, worn crossbody on the chain
- sometimes caught in the rain
- it lives in a tote now and then

Which one is more forgiving? And does the choice of leather change what I should look for in QC photos? More on this in [Chanel Classic Flap tells](https://superreps.net/t/chanel-classic-flap-tells-hardware-caviar-or-the-leather-feel/78).

Lovely question, and the honest answer is that they’re two quite different bags wearing the same shape.

**Lambskin** is the one that photographs beautifully: a soft sheen, plump quilting, that buttery look. It also marks. Fingernail scratches, rubbed corners, the front edge of the flap going shiny where your hand lands. The threads are full of people who adore it and baby it.

**Caviar** is a pebbled, grained calfskin with a tougher finish. It holds its structure, the quilting reads crisper and flatter, and everyday knocks mostly disappear into the grain. For the kind of use you describe, most of the long-term posts lean caviar.

Let me push back on one myth before it settles in: **“caviar never shows wear”** isn’t true.

- Corners still rub through eventually, on originals and reps alike.
- On lower tiers the grain can be embossed so evenly that it repeats, and that reads “plastic” up close.
- A heavy surface coating looks tough on day one and can crack along the flap fold later.

My scores for your use case:

- Caviar: durability 8/10, looks 7/10
- Lambskin: durability 5/10, looks 9/10 (when fresh)

Caviar wins on paper. It just isn’t bulletproof.

That’s helpful, thank you. Silly follow-up: in comparison photos the caviar quilting always looks flatter. Is that a sign of a worse bag, or just how it is?

Not silly at all. That’s simply how the two leathers behave, on the originals as well. Lambskin is soft, so the diamonds puff up; caviar is firmer, so the stitch lines sink in less and the quilting looks more defined. A flat caviar flap is normal. A flat _lambskin_ flap is worth a second look.

On care, little and often:

- **Lambskin:** keep it away from rough surfaces and zips, don’t overfill it, store it gently stuffed. Very light surface marks are often said to soften if you rub them gently with a clean fingertip. Only on the faintest marks, and test somewhere hidden first.
- **Caviar:** a dry, soft cloth after use is usually all it needs. Go easy with conditioners; they can leave an odd shine on coated grain.

</div>

Since you asked about QC, here’s what I’d check for each leather:

**Caviar**

- Grain size: even across the panel, but not a perfectly repeating stamp. Compare a 2 × 2 cm patch on the front with the same patch on the back.
- Sheen: a soft glow, not glassy.
- Flap fold: ask for a short video of the flap opening. The leather should flex, not crease sharply.

**Lambskin**

- Creases already present at the flap fold or on the back pocket.
- Puffiness should be even from diamond to diamond; one flat row stands out.
- Scuffs on corners from packing.

**Both**

- Panel dimensions against your reference: a couple of millimetres is normal, a centimetre isn’t.
- Stitch lines continuing straight from the flap onto the body when closed.

One more disagreement, on rain. Yes, lambskin water-spots and caviar mostly lets water bead off. But the caviar on reps varies a lot. A well-made one shrugs off a shower. A heavily coated one can start looking tired at the fold long before the corners go. So “caviar for rain” holds, as long as the flap video shows leather that actually bends.

</div>

So if I’ve understood: daily wear and some rain points to caviar, occasional wear and treating it gently points to lambskin. Does the hardware colour make any difference to the choice?

</div>

You’ve understood it perfectly. To pull the thread together:

**For a first flap bag used most days, crossbody, with some rain: caviar.**

- It hides everyday scuffs, keeps its shape and copes with damp far better.
- Its flatter, more defined quilting is normal, not a flaw.
- It isn’t indestructible: corners and the flap fold are where wear shows first.

**Choose lambskin if** it’ll be an occasional bag and you love that soft, plump look enough to be careful with it.

**In QC:**

- Caviar: even but not repetitive grain, a soft sheen, a flap that flexes in video.
- Lambskin: no creases or scuffs on arrival, evenly plump diamonds.
- Both: panel sizes against your reference, quilting lines meeting when the flap is closed.

**Hardware colour** is taste. Both leathers come with gold-tone and silver-tone hardware on originals. Whatever you choose, check that the chain, the turn-lock and any rings are the same tone; a mismatch is more visible than the colour itself.

Could someone post caviar and lambskin flap fronts side by side in soft daylight? The flatter caviar quilting next to the puffier lambskin diamonds shows the difference better than any description.

</div>

One small addition for whichever you choose: store it upright, gently stuffed, with the chain tucked inside its dust bag so it can’t press into the leather. That’s half of keeping either one looking right.
