A photo thread for dress watches on leather. Most wristshots here are steel sports watches on bracelets, and one recent post said exactly that: the conversation revolves around sports models, so where do dress watches fit? Post yours, and add **wrist size in cm** , **case diameter** , and **which strap** it’s on: stock or replaced, and what leather.

The most useful shot: from above at a slight angle, with the shirt cuff partly over the case, so we can see how the watch sits under a sleeve.

The first thing almost every dress watch thread says: **the stock strap is the weak point.** One owner of a Tank Large described the dress slot in their collection as “stock strap, I know it sucks”. Another thread asked about a croc strap on a Tank and said that, in their experience, rep leather is usually poor and very obvious. A plain, well-made strap does more for a dress watch than any dial detail.

And the strap has to match the watch’s register. A matte calf strap on a gold Day-Date 36 looked right in one wristshot, precisely because it calmed the watch down. A shiny, plasticky croc print does the opposite. On a steel watch, the classic question is brown or black. Several posts on steel dress watches on brown leather show that dark brown is the more forgiving choice in photos.

What about the cuff? Dress watches are supposed to slide under a shirt cuff.

</div>

That’s the case height. A dress watch reads right when it’s thin enough to disappear under the cuff. On reps, the height is often where the movement choice shows, and you can’t fix it with a strap. A wristshot with the cuff half over the case tells you more than a straight-down shot, so it’s worth including one.

On photography: one tip thread showed the same watch in portrait mode and in a regular photo, and the portrait mode version looked far better because the background blur hides the clutter. The other tip from the threads is to shoot from a bit further away and zoom in rather than close up with the wide lens. A dress watch is small and flat, and a wide lens distorts it more than it does a diver.

And on choosing: the “which dress watch?” threads keep naming the same few, a Tank, a Calatrava-style, a Master Ultra Thin, a Breguet-style Classique. The Tank side is covered in the [Tank Must thread](https://superreps.net/t/tank-must-af-k11-ou-f1-ce-que-disent-les-avis-defaut-par-defaut/317). Whatever the model, the posts agree on one thing: on a dress watch there is nowhere to hide. A small flaw on a plain dial is more visible than on a busy sports dial.

Can someone pull this together into a template?

Summary, plus a template for wristshots in this thread:

**What makes a dress watch read right on leather**

1. **Replace the stock strap** if it looks plasticky. It’s the most common tell.
2. **Strap finish:** matte calf or a good-quality grained leather beats a shiny print.
3. **Colour:** on steel, dark brown is the most forgiving; black is the most formal.
4. **Case height:** it should slide under a cuff. A strap can’t fix a thick case.
5. **Plain dials show everything:** judge them in daylight.

**Wristshot template** (copy this)

- Wrist: \_\_ cm
- Watch and diameter: \_\_
- Strap: stock / replaced, leather type and colour
- One shot from above, one with the cuff half over the case

For straps versus bracelets on sports watches, there’s [the Sub on rubber, NATO or bracelet thread](https://superreps.net/t/mi-submariner-en-caucho-nato-o-brazalete-ensenad-vuestras-combinaciones/134), and for sizing on a 7-inch wrist, [Santos Medium or Large](https://superreps.net/t/santos-medium-or-large-on-a-7-inch-wrist-show-yours-and-say-what-youd-change/293).

Good template. The cuff shot especially, because that’s where dress watches win or lose.
