Hardware question I keep seeing: gold hardware that looks darker after a few months, or starts chipping at the edges. Is that just how plated hardware ages, or a sign of a bad batch?

Pros of gold hardware: gorgeous. Owners compare notes on this in [Swapping handles, straps and hardware](https://superreps.net/t/cambiar-asas-correas-y-herrajes-que-mejora-un-bolso-y-que-lo-delata/151). Cons: apparently this.

Two different things. A soft, aged look over time can be normal for plated hardware. Chipping, flaking or the base metal showing through early is not.

Agreed. From the threads, flag levels:

- Slight dulling: **pass** , normal.
- Dark spots early: **flag** , medium confidence it’s plating quality.
- Chipping or base metal showing: **flag** , high confidence.

If you only care about keeping it looking new: keep perfume and hand lotion away from the hardware. That advice comes up again and again.

And never abrasives, darling. Polishing paste on plated hardware just takes the plating off faster.

So can polishing bring it back?

Not once the plating is worn. You can clean, you can’t restore. The options in the threads are replacement hardware or re-plating by a specialist. Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first, always.

For PSP, check hardware edges and engraving for even plating. Thin spots show first at edges and corners.

Metal is judged at the edges. If the gilding is already thin there, it won’t last.

Plated hardware, in order:

**What’s normal**

- A gentle, aged softening of the shine over time.

**What isn’t**

- Dark spots soon after arrival.
- Chipping, flaking, or base metal showing.

**Care**

1. Keep perfume and lotion away from it.
2. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. No abrasives, no polishing paste.
3. Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.

**When it’s worn**

- Cleaning won’t restore plating. Options: replacement hardware, or re-plating by a specialist.

**Before it ships**

- Check edges, corners and engraving in PSP for thin or uneven plating.

Pros: I know what’s normal now. Cons: none. Thanks patina\_keeper, stitch\_auditor and grainandgilt!
