Okay, a question that keeps popping up everywhere and I’d love one solid answer for the wiki: **how long does a rep watch realistically last?**

In the community threads you see both extremes. Some people report pieces still ticking after 20+ years. Others report a stem breaking in the first month, or even a watch dead on arrival. There is more detail in [Why does rep lume fade after an hour](https://superreps.net/t/why-does-rep-lume-fade-after-an-hour-and-is-a-relume-ever-worth-it/297). Is there a pattern behind that, or is it pure luck?

The long-lived ones make lovely stories. In the recent RepTime thread on exactly this, people described simple quartz pieces still running after many years, and automatics from early, long-discontinued factory generations still worn regularly, some apparently never serviced.

But I’d be careful about survivorship bias. The watches that died early don’t tend to get a nostalgic photo post.

Fair point! So are the long-lasting stories just the lucky ones?

</div>

Partly. From the reports in that thread there’s a clear split, though:

- **Hardware failures early on** (stem, crown, DOA): reported on recent VSF pieces too, by a minority, and described in the thread itself as “luck of the draw”.
- **Long-term survivors** : usually pieces that got serviced, or that simply had no early defect.

What we _don’t_ have is a failure rate. Nobody has numbers, only anecdotes. Certainty: low. I wouldn’t put a percentage in the wiki.

If I may add a small, perhaps old-fashioned, observation: a watch that is worn gently and kept clean ages very differently from one that lives in the sauna and on the building site. The anecdotes rarely say which life the watch had.

</div>

Very true. One report in that thread was a piece worn through construction work, pool days and saunas for about two years before it started showing issues.

Does the movement choice matter? The new “Who Makes the Best” update moved the Submariner sections from the 2836 to “free sprung” 3235 clones, for example.

It may, but careful: the guide is about accuracy and execution, not longevity. And in the Clean nostalgia thread, people couldn’t even agree which 3235 clone Clean used on which model (SH3235 versus DD3235 came up). To be verified before anyone draws durability conclusions.

Let me try to pull it together, the way a watchmaker would explain it at the bench.

**1. There’s no reliable lifespan figure.** The community has many anecdotes of pieces lasting 10, 20, even 30 years, and a smaller number of early failures (stems, DOA). Nobody has published failure statistics, so avoid “reps last X years”.

**2. Most failures reported early are hardware, not “wear-out”.** Stems, crowns and the odd dead-on-arrival piece. That’s why the first weeks after delivery matter: wind it, set it, use the date and the crown, and flag problems early, while they’re still easy to sort out.

**3. Long-term survival depends on servicing.** The recurring advice in the thread is to **find a watchmaker who is willing to work on reps** , and several people note it can take a few tries to find one. With a donor movement, many hardware faults can be fixed. One contributor says reps can last 5+ years if they don’t arrive with hardware issues.

**4. Movement choice is about accuracy first.** The newer 3235-type clones are rated on execution in the guide, but there’s no solid data on whether they outlast the older 2836-based pieces. Treat that as unknown.

**5. Care matters.** Keep the crown screwed down, avoid assuming water resistance on an unverified piece, and clean the bracelet regularly, not aggressively. The RepTime cleaning thread is a good start.

A practical warning: please don’t open the case yourself to “have a look”. The most common DIY damage is a scratched caseback, a lost seal or dust on the balance, and then a small problem becomes a big one.

Lovely summary. And if anyone has a long-serving piece with its service history, do share. That’s the evidence we’re missing.
