Denim question that comes up constantly: people order rep jeans in their “usual waist size” and they come out too tight, too loose or way too long. Two parts:

1. How do you size rep jeans properly? If that is your question too, see [the thread on Essentials hoodie sizing](https://superreps.net/t/essentials-hoodie-sizing-tag-size-or-pit-to-pit-why-batches-differ/203).
2. If they’re too long, can a tailor shorten them without ruining a distressed or stacked hem? More on this in [Rick Owens sizing](https://superreps.net/t/rick-owens-sizing-italian-sizes-long-tees-and-drop-crotch-pants-how-do-you-pick/296).

Part 1 is easy if you do it with measurements. The waist number on a tag is a label, not a measurement, and it varies between makers.

Take your best-fitting jeans, button them, lay them flat:

- **Waist:** straight across the waistband, then double it.
- **Front rise:** crotch seam to top of the waistband.
- **Thigh:** 1–2 cm below the crotch, straight across.
- **Inseam:** crotch seam down the inside leg to the hem.
- **Leg opening:** across the hem.

</div>

Why so many measurements? Waist and length are enough, surely.

</div>

Because two jeans with the same waist can fit totally differently. A low rise sits lower on the hips and feels tighter. A slim thigh looks skinny even with the right waist. Leg opening decides whether it stacks or breaks on the shoe.

</div>

Also stretch. Stretch denim tends to give a bit after wear, rigid denim much less. ✔ Ask whether the fabric has elastane before comparing numbers.

</div>

And the length? Baggy jeans stacking on sneakers is a popular look. How much extra is too much?

</div>

That’s where part 2 comes in. Too much stack becomes puddles. A tailor can fix it, but how matters:

- **Standard hem:** cut and re-hem. Looks clean and flat. Kills any distressing.
- **Original hem (Euro hem):** cut a section above the hem and reattach the original hem. Keeps the factory look and any distressing. A bit of bulk at the join.
- **Chain-stitch hem:** for that roped vintage denim look.

</div>

And what if they have a zip at the bottom, at the hem? I’m unsure about those models. 🤔

</div>

Doable, but more work: the tailor either moves the zip up or removes it and re-hems. Ask before agreeing. Not every tailor will do it.

Full answer, both parts:

**Part 1: sizing**

1. Measure your best-fitting jeans flat: waist (×2), front rise, thigh, inseam, leg opening.
2. Compare to the size chart **and** the QC measurements of the actual pair.
3. Prioritise in this order: **waist → rise → thigh**. Length can be fixed; a tight thigh can’t.
4. Stretch denim: you can go a touch snugger. Rigid: match your numbers.

**Part 2: fixing length**

| Hem you want to keep | Ask the tailor for | Difficulty |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Plain hem, no detail | Standard re-hem | Easy |
| Distressed or factory hem | Original / Euro hem | Medium |
| Vintage roped look | Chain-stitch hem | Medium (needs the machine) |
| Zip at the hem | Move the zip or remove and re-hem | Harder, ask first |

**Rule of thumb:** order for waist, rise and thigh. Let a tailor handle length.

Perfect. Marking-worthy. And for DIY people: a standard hem is a good first sewing project. Leave Euro hems to someone with a denim machine.

Waist, rise, thigh, then the tailor. Easy. 👖
