Cartier Santos Medium vs Large: the eternal question, but this time for **average wrists**. The French thread covers [Medium vs Small on slim wrists](https://superreps.net/fr/t/santos-medium-ou-small-sur-un-poignet-fin-que-montrent-vraiment-les-photos-au-poignet/107). Here it’s the 7-inch club, roughly 17 to 18 cm.

If you post a wristshot, please add three things: **wrist size in cm** , **Medium or Large** , and **bracelet or strap**. And say what you’d change if you chose again.

The most useful wristshot here: straight down from above, with your wrist size written on a card next to the watch.

Numbers first, because the diameter is misleading on a square case. Retail figures are roughly **35 × 42 mm for the Medium** and **40 × 47.5 mm for the Large** (width × lug-to-lug). On a square watch, lug-to-lug is what decides the fit. On a 17 cm wrist the Large’s 47-ish mm usually still sits on the flat top of the wrist, but with very little margin.

And the square bezel takes up a lot of visual space. A Santos Large looks bigger than a 40 mm round watch. That’s what almost all the wristshots show: at 17 cm, the Medium looks elegant, the Large looks sporty. Both are legitimate; they just have a different character.

That matches the long-form posts. One owner at about 17.5 cm went Large and wrote that you really can’t go wrong with either, it depends how you like to wear a watch. Another sizing thread from someone torn between the two said the same thing in a different way: the Large reads as a sports watch, the Medium as a dress watch.

So it’s more about style than about fit at this wrist size?

At this wrist size, yes, with one exception: the bracelet. The Santos bracelet is wide and flat. On the Large, it quickly looks massive on a 17 cm wrist. On a leather strap, the same watch looks noticeably smaller. Many photos in the threads show exactly that. If you’re unsure, compare photos on a leather strap, not just on steel.

And since this is still a rep forum, a QC note for anyone deciding: the details people flag differ by size and version. Threads on the Large mention a **floating “R”** in CARTIER on some dials, a **crown that sits too proud** , **screws** on the bezel that don’t look right, and on one version a **date font** that people disliked. Threads on the Medium more often mention **case shape**. Check those in the QC photos for the size you pick.

</div>

Small sceptic note on that: one poster asked whether the Large was simply “more accurate” because it’s labelled nobody-would-ever-know in some lists while the Medium isn’t. Those labels are opinions. They don’t replace looking at the case shape, crown and screws yourself.

Fair. Can someone sum it up so people know what to post and how to decide?

Here’s the summary for 17–18 cm wrists, plus a template for wristshots.

**Choosing**

| | Medium | Large |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Size (approx. retail) | 35 × 42 mm | 40 × 47.5 mm |
| On 17–18 cm | sits well inside the wrist | fills the wrist, little margin |
| Character | dress, discreet | sporty, present |
| Bracelet | balanced | can look heavy; strap makes it smaller |

**Rules of thumb**

1. Check lug-to-lug against the flat width of your wrist, not the diameter.
2. If you’re between the two, compare **strap** photos: that’s where the Large looks most wearable.
3. Check the QC points listed above for the size you choose: dial printing (the “R”), crown height, bezel screws, date font; case shape on the Medium.

If anyone has both sizes, a photo of the Medium and the Large side by side on a flat surface with a ruler would settle width and lug-to-lug at a glance.

The posting template is a very good idea. At last we can compare comparable photos.

Template it is. Marking this as the answer, and waiting for your wristshots. 📸
