Stone Island jackets and overshirts keep coming up in QC threads, and the badge gets more scrutiny than the garment. Which badge details actually separate a good one from a bad one? More on this in [Canada Goose-style parka QC](https://superreps.net/t/canada-goose-style-parka-qc-badge-fur-zips-and-the-warmth-question/254). Some “flaws” people call out seem to appear on retail too.

Badge checklist from the older guides and QC threads:

- ✔ **Buttons:** “Stone” and “Island” on the button face, with cross markings; donut-shaped with a central cross.
- ✔ **Border:** dark green embroidered outline.
- ✔ **Buttonholes:** yellow stitching around the “eyelids”.
- ✔ **Lettering:** letters not touching each other or the yellow circles.
- ✔ **Compass:** centred, not touching the text.

</div>

And the retail variance part?

</div>

That’s the catch. Several guides say retail badges can have imperfect embroidery too. That’s why one slightly uneven letter isn’t enough to call a badge bad. Look at the overall pattern instead: colour, thickness, how dense the embroidery is.

</div>

The badge has changed over the decades too. A badge correct for a particular era isn’t automatically correct for another. People compare a current-season piece against a vintage reference, then declare one of them wrong.

Real talk: does anyone outside this forum ever look at the badge buttons? 😅

</div>

On the street, people notice colour and size first. A badge that’s too bright, too big or sits crooked on the sleeve is what catches the eye. Button text, only at close range.

Allow me a sewing note: also look at the **back** of the embroidery if there’s a photo. Dense, clean embroidery on the back (no long loose threads or “skips”) usually means a well-adjusted machine, on the original just as on a good replica. Oh, and the patch is **buttoned on** : if it’s sewn on permanently, something doesn’t add up.

Good point. What about the garment itself? People rarely mention fabric.

Full QC order, badge plus garment:

**1. Placement (most visible)**

- ✔ Badge sits straight on the upper left sleeve, correct size for the garment.
- ✖ Crooked, oversized or too high/low.

**2. Badge colour and embroidery**

- ✔ Dark green border, yellow buttonhole stitching, dense embroidery.
- ✖ Thin, shiny or “flat” embroidery; colours too bright.

[[PHOTO: close-up of a Stone Island compass badge showing the border, buttonhole stitching and lettering]]

**3. Details**

- ✔ Letters separate, compass centred, buttons with the correct text and cross.
- Minor unevenness alone = not a deal-breaker (retail varies).

**4. Back of the badge (if available)**

- ✔ Clean, dense stitching. ✖ Long loose threads, skipped stitches.

**5. The garment**

- Fabric weight and hand-feel, zip quality, seam straightness, wash and inner labels.

**6. Compare to the same era and line.** Badges have changed over time.

How noticeable when worn: placement and colour, yes. Button text and back stitching, only at close range.

Clear and practical. Marking it. The “same era” point alone saves a lot of wrong calls.

So: placement and colour first, button nerdery last. Got it. 🧭
