VS3235 vs DD3235: which one is actually better? The [clone vs 2824 thread](https://superreps.net/t/clone-movement-or-2824-what-you-actually-gain-and-lose-with-vs3235-dd3235-vs-an-asian-eta-type/132) settled “clone or Asian ETA-type” for me. Now every listing for a Sub or Datejust says one or the other, sometimes with “free sprung” added. What actually differs between the two? And does free sprung change anything for someone who just wears the watch? If that is your question too, see [How long does a rep watch actually last](https://superreps.net/t/how-long-does-a-rep-watch-actually-last-and-what-tends-to-fail-first/74).

Start with the names, because that’s half the confusion. The most detailed identification guide on the subject groups them together: **DD3235 and VS3235 are both Dandong-made 3235 clones**. “VS” is the name used on VSF’s watches. So “VS3235 vs DD3235” is mostly a label question, not two different designs.

What does differ is the **version and the finish** : earlier and later revisions, and some batches with decorative changes.

</div>

Confermo, ed è il punto da capire. Rispondo in inglese, perché vale per tutti: the differences that matter between two watches labelled “3235” are **which factory made the movement** (Dandong, Shanghai, or the newer Jinghe ones) and **which revision** it is. Two watches can say “VS3235” and “DD3235” and be closer to each other than two watches that both say “3235” but come from different makers.

</div>

And people do get it wrong. One thread had a Datejust sold as DD3235 that turned out, from the engraved serial, to be a Shanghai SH3235 after a service. So the label in a listing is a claim. The movement photo is the evidence.

OK, so what about “free sprung”?

</div>

On the genuine 3235, free sprung means the balance has no regulator arm. The rate is adjusted with small weights on the balance itself instead of by moving an index. For the wearer the claimed benefit is stability: nothing to knock out of adjustment.

On clones there are two very different things using the same words:

- **“Free sprung effect” / decorative:** one thread pointed out VSF moving to a DD3235 with a free-sprung _look_. Owners describe it as appearance. Another owner asked how you even regulate the rate on such a “fake free sprung” balance, which tells you it’s not a normal setup for a home tinkerer.
- **Actual free sprung:** a newer Jinghe JH3235. A watchmaker who had one next to a DD3235 fitted with a genuine balance described the differences, including a **flat hairspring** on the JH movement.

</div>

On the practical side, what changes on the wrist? Almost nothing, if the movement is well regulated. It changes for whoever has to **regulate** it: a balance without a regulator arm is adjusted with the weights, and you need a watchmaker with the right tools. So “free sprung” isn’t an automatic upgrade for the wearer. It’s a construction detail, and on some versions purely cosmetic.

</div>

On real-world performance, the reports I trust are the boring ones. One owner did a full power reserve test on a VS3235 Sub that was nearly a year old: about **68 hours** from full manual wind. Another DD3235 owner noted it ran for days without needing to be set, compared with an SH movement they had before that needed setting every 12 to 18 hours. Problems reported include a winding issue where the hands jump, and a Day-Date whose date didn’t change at midnight. Those are individual pieces, not patterns.

So what should I actually look at when a listing says one or the other?

</div>

Here’s the practical summary.

**1. VS3235 vs DD3235**

- Both are Dandong 3235 clones; “VS” is the name used on VSF watches.
- What matters is the **revision** and whether it’s really a Dandong movement. Ask for a **movement photo** , and compare it with an identification guide.

**2. “Free sprung” on a listing**

| Label | What it usually means | What it changes for the wearer |
| --- | --- | --- |
| “free sprung effect” / decorative | free-sprung look, conventional regulation reported unclear | nothing; regulation can be awkward |
| true free sprung (e.g. JH3235) | balance without regulator arm, regulated with weights | little day to day; regulation is a watchmaker job |

**3. What owners actually report**

- Power reserve close to the advertised figure on a healthy VS3235 (one test: ~68 h).
- Good stability reports on DD3235 versus older SH movements.
- Individual faults: hands jumping while winding, date not advancing. Ask to see both in the QC video.

**4. QC requests**

- Movement photo (maker, revision, serial engraving).
- Timegrapher photo, read the way it’s explained in the [timegrapher thread](https://superreps.net/it/t/timegrapher-nelle-foto-qc-quali-numeri-contano-davvero-e-quali-possiamo-ignorare/99).
- A short video of the date change and of winding.

If you’ve had the caseback off, post a close-up of the movement with the balance and the engraving visible. Side-by-side shots of both clones are the most useful.

Terms like hairspring, balance or regulator are explained in the [movements and parts glossary](https://superreps.net/t/watch-movements-parts-glossary/111).

That clears it up. “The label is a claim, the movement photo is the evidence.” Marking it.

And no DIY caseback opening to “see the free sprung”. The gaskets will thank you.
