The "BASF Boost" debate: real material or marketing label?

A term that did the rounds of the rep forums for a long time: “BASF Boost”. Back in the early 350 V2 days, a thread asked whether it was “the biggest lie” in the scene. More on this in Yeezy 350 V2 reps: is “half a size up” still the rule, or do some batches fit TTS now?. What was behind it, and what did the community actually find out back then?

Related threads: Yeezy Slides and Foam Runners sizing: full size up, or true to size? (and the EU vs “FR” label) and Yeezy 350 V2: where did the “half a size up” rule actually come from?.

Quick background: BASF is the chemical company that developed the expanded TPU pellets used in retail Boost. So “BASF Boost” on a listing was a claim: “this is the same material as retail.” The debate was whether that claim was true.

So was it true?? Did anyone ever prove it?

Nobody could prove it from photos. The early threads were split: some called it marketing, others said it felt close. What people could compare were feel and look.

Comparison points from a later retail-vs-rep guide (Bred 350 V2):

  • retail Boost: softer, squishier, more rounded pellets
  • “BASF” rep Boost: flatter, less glossy, sometimes firmer
Minor to noticeable, depending on the pair.

And long after that, someone was still asking whether there were any 350 reps with “real” Boost at all. So the question was never really answered.

Comfort is where opinions were most positive. Many comments in those later threads described the better “BASF” pairs as close to retail in feel, while still differing in texture.

So “BASF” was basically a rarity tier label on the item card. Sounds legendary, unverifiable. :video_game:

And the label turned into a factory name over time. Later on, “PK BASF” was used as the name of a separate 350 V2 production line, which made it even more confusing.

Summary, in order:

Early threads: “BASF Boost” appears on listings as a claim of retail-identical material. Most call it marketing; nobody can verify it.
Later guides: retail-vs-rep comparisons of look and feel: rep foam flatter, less glossy, sometimes firmer, pellets less rounded. Comfort described as close on better pairs.
Still later: people still ask whether any rep has “real” Boost. No conclusive answer.
Eventually: “BASF” also works as part of a factory name.

If you have a pair, a close-up of the midsole pellets in raking light would show their shape and gloss.

What it means today: treat any material claim on a listing as unverified. Judge the midsole by what you can see and feel: pellet shape, gloss, softness, how it rebounds.

Very neatly summed up. Thanks! Material labels are claims, not proof. Marked.
