Bag of the day: Fendi Baguette, its story since 1997 and the FF buckle

Few bags have such an everyday name and such a refined story. The Baguette was born in 1997, designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi, then creative director of accessories, and takes its name from the way it’s carried under the arm, like French bread.

Real success came with Sex and the City, in the third season, with that line of Carrie’s that everyone remembers. I’d love to see your Baguettes, and work out together what makes an FF buckle convincing.

The FF buckle is everything on this bag. From the threads: matte, with a good weight, clean edges and a secure magnet.

Flags to watch, medium-high confidence: a puffy or rounded FF, or hardware that looks too yellow. A bulky clasp is a giveaway too.

The Baguette is pure joy! I love the colourful versions, they look so fun in photos.

And the stitching around the flap. Even, straight, and the flap sitting square. Pass if it closes flat.

On nappa and suede versions, treat the leather gently. Test any conditioner on a hidden spot first.

Short strap. Under the arm, as intended.

Is it a good first bag?

A lovely one, darling, if you like a small, characterful bag. Summary:
