Pepsi GMT 126710: Noob vs GMF vs VRF, as compared back then

The Pepsi on Jubilee was one of the hottest Rolex reps for a while, and older threads are full of the same three-way question: Noob, GMF or, a bit later, VRF?

These are older batches, no longer produced. Let’s reconstruct the comparison as it was then. If that is your question too, see the thread on GMT-Master II Pepsi. Spoiler: the bezel colours were the battleground.

Related threads: which gen of the original to compare against and Submariner 126610LN QC.

Rispondo in inglese. Summary of those threads, with confidence:

  • Noob: best hand stack, but movement described as fragile, and bezel colours visibly off. (medium)
  • GMF: considered the safer, more durable choice, but with weaker crystal/cyclops and its own bezel colour issues. (medium)

The red and blue insert is so hard to get right. Even on genuine pieces, the colours shift with light. Almost every thread from then has a debate about the insert colours.

And what about VRF? Where does it fit in?

The VRF release thread on the big forum describes a better bezel insert, but colours that still weren’t quite right and visible flaws at the colour transition. The movement is linked there with GMF’s.

In inglese, sul movimento: the recurring advice was that if reliability mattered, the safer route was not the Noob version. Detailed movement codes in those threads are inconsistent, so I won’t repeat them as fact.

So which one did people recommend for a first GMT?

The “first rep” threads of that period asked exactly that, and the answers followed the same split: reliability on one side, looks on the other.

The picture back then, gently summarised:

Noob GMF VRF (later)
Hand stack best ok ok
Bezel colours visibly off issues too better insert, colours still not right
Colour transition — — visible flaws
Crystal / cyclops ok weaker —
Movement reputation fragile more durable linked to GMF’s

Context: during the big raids, a dealer statement listed both GMF and Noob as probably not reopening (see the thread on the factory raids). Read this as history; current Pepsi reps need current sources.

Do ask for daylight photos of any Pepsi insert. Indoor light lies about red.

Perfect, and so true about indoor light.
