Jordan 1 High OG QC: the hourglass heel, the Wings logo and the toe box, a checklist for any colourway

Jordan 1 High OG QC threads usually go colourway by colourway. But most of the checks are the same on every pair, so here’s a single checklist that applies to almost any OG High. The colourway-specific stuff, like the cracked collar on some pairs, has its own threads.

Four checks carry most of the weight: the hourglass heel, the Wings logo, the toe box, and the swoosh with the collar.

What makes the heel the first check? Isn’t the logo what people look at?

Score out of 10 for how much each check tells you, with reasons:

  • Hourglass heel: 9/10. From straight behind, the heel narrows in the middle and flares at top and bottom. A straight, “tube” heel is the most common tell, and it shows on feet.
  • Wings logo: 7/10. Depth, position and proportion of the debossed logo on the collar.
  • Toe box: 8/10. Height and profile from the side. Too tall and it looks puffy.
  • Swoosh: 7/10. Shape and tip position, same idea as on a Dunk.

The heel scores highest because you can’t hide it, and it needs the right photo angle to judge. Summing up: heel first, then toe box, then the details.

So how do you take a heel photo that’s actually useful? People seem to ask for retakes all the time.

Three steps:

  1. Put the shoe on a flat surface with the camera at heel height, not above.
  2. Shoot straight from behind, both shoes side by side if possible.
  3. Use even light, no flash glare on the leather.

From above, every heel looks narrower and the hourglass disappears. That angle is the main reason for retakes.

On the Wings logo, a myth to debunk: “deeper is always better” isn’t true. The logo should be clearly debossed, with crisp letters and the small trademark symbol readable, but too deep can be wrong as well. And its position matters: it should sit level on the collar, not tilted towards the heel. Compare with retail photos of the same colourway, since the logo position varies a little between releases.

And the toe box: it’s like the nose of a classic car, the side profile is everything. From the side it should slope down gently towards the toe. A tall, rounded toe box is the second most common tell after the heel. The perforations should be in clean rows, like on a Dunk.

And the collar? I keep reading about cracks on some pairs.

Summary checklist for any Jordan 1 High OG:

  1. Heel (9/10): hourglass from straight behind, photo at heel height.
  2. Toe box (8/10): gentle slope in profile, not tall or puffy; clean perforations.
  3. Wings logo (7/10): crisp deboss, level position, readable trademark symbol; not just “deep”.
  4. Swoosh (7/10): clean tip and curve, placement matching retail.
  5. Collar: height and padding match retail. Intentional cracking on certain colourways is a separate QC, covered in the Lost & Found collar thread.
  6. Tongue tag and stitching: even, but minor stitching irregularities alone mean little.

Summing up the thread: shape first, logo and details second.

Good checklist. For background on why one batch became the usual reference for most Jordan 1 colourways, see Jordan 1: come LJR è diventato il riferimento, and Batch names explained for the letters.
