Jordan 4 on feet: jeans, cargos or shorts, and how the toe box looks once worn

Jordan 4s are bulky, with the wings, the mesh panels and that big tongue. On feet they either look great or like boots. Owners compare notes on this in the thread on Margiela GATs on feet. What works: jeans, cargos or shorts? And how does the toe box look once they’ve been worn? More on this in the thread on Jordan 4 sizing. Post your on-feet shots. The kind that helps:

from the side, straight jeans resting on the tongue, natural light.

Verdict first: straight or relaxed jeans with a slight stack, resting on the tongue. That’s the look the J4 was made for. Skinny jeans make them look like boots; very wide trousers bury them.

Score out of 10 for each:

  • Straight jeans with a small stack: 9/10. Shows the shape, balances the bulk.
  • Cargos, tapered or with cuffs gathered at the ankle: 8/10. Works if the hem sits just above the tongue.
  • Shorts: 7/10. Fine, but the shoe looks bigger; crew socks help.
  • Skinny jeans: 4/10. Too much shoe for the leg.

And lacing? Tight, loose, or skip the top eyelets?

Loose and skipping the top eyelet is the common choice. The tongue sits forward and the shoe looks chunkier. Tight lacing slims it but pinches. That’s taste. For fit, the Jordan 4 sizing thread covers why some people go half up.

On the toe box after wear: J4s crease across the toe like any leather shoe. The overlay and mesh break up the crease lines, so it shows less than on a Jordan 1. Score for how visible creasing is: 5/10. Normal, not a flaw. The J4 QC thread covers what is a flaw.

Disagreement, though: some people say creasing on J4s is “less visible on reps because the leather is stiffer”. Isn’t that a bad thing?

Right. Stiffer leather creases less at first, then cracks rather than folds. Soft creasing is better long term. Never judge a pair by “it doesn’t crease”.

Summary of the on-feet consensus:

  • Best: straight or relaxed jeans with a slight stack resting on the tongue (9/10).
  • Good: cargos with the hem just above the tongue (8/10); shorts with crew socks (7/10).
  • Avoid: skinny jeans (4/10), and trousers so wide they bury the shoe.
  • Lacing: loose, top eyelet skipped, for the classic chunky look; tighter for a slimmer one.
  • Creasing: normal across the toe; the overlays break it up so it shows less than on J1s. Soft creases are better than stiff leather that later cracks.

A top-down photo of a worn toe box would help show how the overlays break up the creases.

Straight jeans, loose laces. Agreed.
