We have a thread on GATs on foot, but no QC yet. Reference points from Maison Margiela’s product pages for the Replica sneaker: a reinterpretation of the German Army Trainer, with a calfskin upper and suede panels, rubber sole and the characteristic white stitching on the heel. The maison’s pages can’t be reached directly by our checking tool, so these details come from the previews of the official pages in search results: anyone who has the page open can compare.
On GATs, QC is almost all materials and proportions.

Newbie question: GATs are very simple. How can you tell whether the materials are well made from photos alone?
You look at how the light falls on the materials:
- The leather has an even surface, with no deep storage creases or patchy shiny areas.
- The suede has its nap running the same way across the whole panel; when brushed, it should change tone evenly.
- The panel edges are cut straight and the stitching is the same distance from the edge.
One photo in daylight, without flash, tells you more than ten indoor photos.
The heel, which is the most recognisable point of the model. The white stitching should be straight, at the same height and centred on both shoes. Then the eyelets: aligned, evenly spaced, with no damaged edges.

The shape last: a side photo next to an official image at the same angle shows whether the toe is too high or too flat. The general order for any pair is in first sneaker QC.
So sole, leather and suede, heel and eyelets, shape. Is there anything the photos can’t tell?
Summary:
- Rubber sole: even colour, clean edge, sharp pattern, same thickness on both shoes.
- Leather and suede: even surface, nap running the same way, straight-cut edges.
- Heel: white stitching straight, at the same height and centred on both shoes.
- Eyelets: aligned and evenly spaced.
- Shape: side comparison with an official image at the same angle.
Not checkable on photos: the real feel of the leather, glue strength, comfort and durability.

Thanks. The side-by-side comparison of the heel stitching is the first one I’ll ask for.
