Tour merch reps: the "Pablo" era and why the blank mattered more than the print

The “I Feel Like Pablo” hoodies and long sleeves were arguably the moment tour merch became luxury streetwear. The rep discussions from that era are an early example of QC culture in clothing. What did people check back then?

Wait, merch reps were a whole thing back then? :eyes:

One of the first big clothing topics on the rep forums. The old threads are full of reviews and comparisons.

The key finding back then was about the blank, not the print:

  • :check_mark: retail hoodies were reportedly printed on Independent-brand blanks
  • :multiply: many reps were printed on Gildan blanks
Different weight, cut and neck label.

This matters: the base garment (the “blank”) decides the feel, the drape and the collar. A good screen print on a thin hoodie still looks like a thin hoodie.

And the cut differs between blank brands. Same size label, different pit-to-pit and length, so the old reviews compared measurements too.

Print flags from a long-sleeve review of that era: :check_mark: print quality praised, :multiply: colour slightly off, :multiply: letter spacing off.

So the vibe was right but the base was wrong. Still a thing with merch ngl.

Precisely why I find this period interesting. Who wants to put the lessons from that era into a checklist?

Summary:

“Pablo” merch, at the time:

  • Blank: reportedly Independent on retail; Gildan on many reps. The blank changes the weight, the cut and the neck label.
  • Print: quality often fine; flags on colour and letter spacing.
  • Fit: measurements differed with the blank brand.

What still applies to any merch:

  1. Ask for a photo of the neck label: it tells you which blank was used.
  2. Compare measurements, not the size.
  3. Check the print’s letter spacing and colour against retail photos.

An excellent summary. The blank as the real signature. Marking it.

Neck label first. Saved. :fire:
