LV monogram QC: which flaws are worth a red light, and which are just normal variation?

Monogram canvas is probably the most QC’d thing in the bag world, and yet the same arguments keep coming up. Is a slightly cut-off LV at the seam a red light? Does a date code font matter on a rep?

I’d love a sensible, shared list of what’s worth flagging and what’s simply normal.

Related threads: Pochette Métis QC, Ten years with a Neverfull rep, First bag: Speedy, Neverfull, or something else and Keepall as a weekender.

Start with the reference. The QC threads say to compare PSPs with the factory’s own photos first, not with retail photos. Otherwise everything looks like a flaw.

Why factory photos and not the real bag? That seems backwards to me.

Because the question in QC is “did I get what this factory makes?” Accuracy against retail is the decision you make before ordering.

Agreed. On monogram continuity: threads note that minor variation at seams is normal. What matters is obvious off-centring or motifs cut off where they shouldn’t be. Neverfull top and side panels are the usual places to check.

May I add the leather trim? Vachetta edges and edge paint deserve a look: even and neat, with no blobs. It’s the part that ages most visibly.

And the heat stamp: even depth, letter spacing. A smudged stamp shows.

And the date code? Some people obsess, some don’t care.

Mixed views in the date-code threads. Many say the interior code matters little for personal use; others expect a plausible code on a higher-tier piece. One detail worth knowing: LV moved from date codes to embedded microchips in 2021, so a newer-style bag may correctly have no code at all. Low priority.

LV monogram QC: red light vs normal variation.

Red light (likely reject or exchange)

  • Monogram obviously off-centre on a main panel, or motifs cut off at a top or side seam on the panels the threads usually check. Fail. High confidence from PSPs.
  • Heat stamp smudged or shallow in places, or uneven letter spacing. Fail. High, with a close-up.
  • Wavy or irregular stitching, or thread colour inconsistent along a seam. Fail. High.
  • Edge paint blobby, cracked or missing on the trim. Fail. Medium–high.

Check (ask for another angle)

  • Canvas tone or sheen that looks different from the factory photos. Check in daylight. Low from photos.
  • Hardware engraving depth. Check with a macro shot. Medium.

Normal variation (pass)

  • Minor monogram shifts at seams, which threads describe as normal.
  • Date code: only check it’s plausible for the model and era. No code at all can be correct for post-2021 styles. Low priority.

Key rule: compare with the factory’s photos, not retail.

Exactly the list I hoped for. Marking it. Thank you all.
